Joe Colangelo Biography

Joe Colangelo is the Chief Operating Officer of StoriBot AI, a Narrative Intelligence company that helps organizations close the gap between the value they create and the story the market actually understands. The role blends the two halves of his career: operating discipline built inside large retail and energy businesses, and a lifelong conviction that the best companies are the ones that can explain themselves clearly.

At StoriBot AI he is responsible for operations, commercial execution and the frameworks clients use to turn customer insight into positioning, content and measurable results. He works with founders, CEOs and boards who know their business is worth more than the market believes, and who need a practical route from that belief to revenue.

Joe Colangelo began his career with Gulf Oil in 1981, when the company flew him from Ontario to Calgary to start in the downstream business. He spent the following two decades in energy retail, moving through field operations, marketing and senior leadership as Gulf's downstream assets were acquired by Petro-Canada.

As a senior retail downstream executive at Petro-Canada he helped run a business of roughly five billion dollars with about 3,500 locations and 200,000 customer transactions every day. That scale teaches a particular kind of discipline: small decisions compound quickly, field execution matters more than strategy decks, and the numbers tell the truth long before anyone is ready to hear it.

He joined the company before its initial public offering at eight dollars a share and left around his twentieth anniversary on 1 January 1997, with the stock near twenty dollars.

Joe Colangelo was part of the original team that launched Petro-Points, one of Canada's best known retail loyalty programs. The work involved far more than a card and a points table. It required aligning site operators, marketing, finance and technology around a single promise to the customer, and then keeping that promise at thousands of forecourts every day.

The lessons from that launch still shape how he advises clients on loyalty: reward the behaviour you actually want, make the value obvious at the moment of purchase, and never let the economics of the program drift away from the economics of the business.

He later served as Chief Executive Officer and Country Managing Director of Regus Canada, leading the national flexible workspace business. The mandate covered network performance, occupancy, pricing, client experience and the people who deliver it, in a business where utilization and service quality decide the result.

Running a national network sharpened his view of what separates a good operator from a great one: clarity about the handful of measures that matter, and the willingness to hold the organization to them.

Joe Colangelo owned and led Contemporary Office Interiors, a commercial interiors dealership serving Western Canada and a proud Herman Miller partner. As owner and president he rebuilt the business around design, project execution and long term client relationships, and grew it into one of the top three dealerships in the world for FF&E, furniture, fixtures and equipment, within its network.

His peers elected him president of the Network Dealers Association, where he represented independent dealers across the continent on manufacturer relationships, program design and the commercial realities of the channel.

He has served on the boards of Bow Valley College and the Peter Lougheed Centre, contributing to governance in post-secondary education and healthcare. Board work, in his view, is not ceremonial. It is the discipline of asking the questions management has stopped asking itself.

He and his family established three scholarships honouring his father, his brother Richard and Momma C, supporting students who are building their own path. Healthcare and education remain the causes he gives his time to.

Joe Colangelo first drove west in 1976 with three friends in a 1972 Camaro and fell in love with Calgary and the Rockies. He has lived and worked in the city ever since 1981. In 1982 a home he bought for $145,000 sold for $45,000 with first mortgage rates at twenty-one percent. His father flew out, told him to suck it up, and offered no rescue. He rebuilt, and repaid the entire loss.

He launched SunDog Eyewear in the United States in 2001 and was holding six hundred thousand US dollars of inventory at cost when the market stopped on 11 September. Both experiences inform how he counsels leaders through shocks they did not cause and cannot control.
