Joe Colangelo, Calgary business strategist and COO of StoriBot AI

The short version

I am Joe Colangelo, a Calgary-based business strategist, retail and loyalty executive, and COO of StoriBot AI. Over four decades I have worked in energy retail, loyalty, workplace solutions, commercial interiors, governance and now AI-powered Narrative Intelligence. The common thread is simple: I help owners and leadership teams find the value they already create, then build the operating discipline and the story that turn it into growth.

I began my career with Gulf Oil in 1981, moved into senior downstream retail leadership at Petro-Canada, helped launch one of Canada's best known loyalty programs, ran Regus Canada as CEO and Country Managing Director, owned and led a top performing commercial interiors dealership, and served on healthcare and post-secondary boards. Along the way I lost a house, rebuilt from zero, launched a company in the United States and watched a Black Swan event arrive on a Tuesday morning in September.

Where it started

I grew up in Clarkson, Ontario, in an era when childhood meant riding your bike all day and coming home when the streetlights came on. Summers were spent at Wasaga Beach and the Colangelo family cottage, where my Uncle Rocky held court and a close Italian family made music and noise in equal measure. I played defensive back for the Clarkson Chargers and, in Grade 13, made the All-Toronto and Greater Toronto Area All-Star team.

Football gave me discipline, preparation, resilience and teamwork. Clarkson gave me the rest of the operating system: independence, family, competition, loyalty and community. Those five words still describe how I run a business and how I coach the leaders I work with.

In 1976 I drove west with three friends in a 1972 Camaro and fell in love with Calgary and the Rockies. Leaving Ontario was hard, because family mattered more than anything. My father, my hero, told me to follow my destiny. In 1981 Gulf Oil flew me first class to Calgary to begin my career, and I have called this city home ever since.

The years that taught the most

In 1982 the bottom fell out. My $145,000 home sold for $45,000 with first mortgage rates at 21 per cent. My father flew to Calgary, looked at the mess, and told me to suck it up. There was no rescue, and he was right not to offer one. I rebuilt for my children, Judy and Kristin, took a transfer to Regina from 1984 to 1985, and repaid the entire loss.

When Gulf's downstream business was acquired by Petro-Canada, I became a senior retail downstream executive in a roughly five billion dollar business with 3,500 locations and 200,000 daily transactions. Petro-Canada went public at $8. It reached $20 around my twentieth anniversary on 1 January 1997, which is when I exited.

In 2001 I launched SunDog Eyewear USA from the ground up. September 11 was a genuine Black Swan. I held approximately US$600,000 of inventory at cost while the market simply stopped. In 2022, after fifteen years, my marriage and family life with two children unexpectedly imploded. Both events taught the same lesson: you cannot control the shock, only the quality of your response.

What I do now

As COO of StoriBot AI, I help businesses close the gap between the value they create and the story the market understands. Machines do the mining. Humans make the positioning decision. That combination, which we call Narrative Intelligence, is the most useful tool I have seen in twenty years for making a good business legible to its market.

I also advise founders, CEOs and boards on retail and loyalty strategy, business transformation and governance. The work is practical: find the numbers that are actually running the business, fix the operating rhythm, decide what the company is willing to be measured against, and then execute past the meeting into Monday morning.

Service and philanthropy

I have served on the boards of Bow Valley College and the Peter Lougheed Centre, contributing to governance in post-secondary education and healthcare. My family funds three scholarships honouring my father, my brother Richard and Momma C. Education and healthcare are where our giving goes, because both are places where one decision can change a life.

If you want to work together, the door is open. Experience matters. Execution matters more.
